Supported Learning students from Southwark College recently hosted their fifth annual Macmillan Coffee Morning at the Colombo Centre, bringing together learners, local residents, and community groups to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support.
As part of the NCG Community Guarantee pillar, Skills for Progression students played a key role in planning and delivering the event. From baking cakes and preparing the venue to welcoming guests and serving refreshments, they developed valuable teamwork, communication and customer service skills while putting their learning into practice.
The event created a warm and welcoming environment that encouraged conversation and connection across generations, demonstrating the positive impact of community engagement and volunteering.
Students also welcomed the opportunity to apply their skills in a real-world setting. Suzy Stirling, Supported Learning student, said: "I really enjoyed putting my baking skills into practice and meeting members of the community. I enjoyed meeting new people and showcasing the skills I've learned in my course."
The initiative was praised by community partners and visitors, who recognised the students' professionalism, empathy, and commitment to supporting others. Through their involvement, students gained valuable employability experience while making a meaningful contribution to an important charitable cause.
Activities such as the Macmillan Coffee Morning play an important part of the Skills for Progression programme, helping learners build confidence, develop workplace skills and make a positive difference within their local community.
Southwark College is proud of its students for demonstrating the values of kindness, inclusion and social responsibility while supporting the vital work of Macmillan Cancer Support.
