Southwark College recently welcomed students, artists, academics and creative industry professionals for its Art & Design Skills Conference, a dynamic day of hands-on workshops, career insights and creative exploration. The event provided students with the opportunity to develop new skills, connect with industry experts and explore the many pathways available within the creative sector.
Throughout the conference, students took part in a range of specialist workshops spanning fine art, digital media, design and gaming. Designed to challenge and inspire, the sessions encouraged students to experiment with new techniques, develop their creative thinking and gain a deeper understanding of the industries they aspire to join.
Students interested in gaming and digital design heard from independent game development studio Shynne Gaming, who shared valuable insight into careers within the fast-growing games industry. Representatives from Teesside University also spoke about progression opportunities and degree-level study, helping students understand how their skills could translate into future careers in digital and creative industries.
For students exploring fine art and design, tutors from City & Guilds of London Art School delivered engaging workshops in sculpture, carving and art history, encouraging participants to push their creative boundaries and experiment with new artistic approaches. Students also gained insight into the wider cultural landscape of South London through contributions from Bold Tendencies, which showcased the impact of community arts projects and creative collaboration.
The practical nature of the conference allowed students to immerse themselves in a range of creative activities, including sketching, sculpting, coding and design challenges. Working alongside peers, tutors and industry professionals, students were able to build confidence, develop technical skills and gain valuable feedback in a supportive and collaborative environment.
Alongside practical learning, the conference highlighted the breadth of opportunities available across the creative industries. Discussions with visiting practitioners and higher education partners helped students explore progression routes into university, employment and freelance creative careers, while providing a clearer understanding of the skills and experiences required to succeed.
The event showcased the creativity, talent and ambition of Southwark College students while reinforcing the College's commitment to providing industry-informed learning experiences. By connecting students with leading creative professionals, universities and arts organisations, the conference helped bridge the gap between education and employment, inspiring students to take their next steps with confidence.
For many students, the conference offered more than just a day of workshops. It provided a valuable opportunity to explore future possibilities, gain inspiration from industry experts and see how their creativity can lead to exciting careers across the arts, design, media and gaming sectors.
