Students at Southwark College had the opportunity to explore a wide range of progression opportunities at the college's Higher Education Fair, which welcomed representatives from more than 20 universities.

Universities including Goldsmiths, University of London, Kingston University, Brunel University London, University of East Anglia and many others attended the event, giving students the chance to speak directly with admissions teams, learn about degree courses and gather information to support their future decisions.

Throughout the day, students also attended a series of informative talks covering key aspects of progression to higher education. Sessions included Why Choose University? Higher and Degree Apprenticeships and How to Write an Impressive Personal Statement, helping students gain valuable insights into both university and apprenticeship pathways.

Among those representing their university was former Southwark College student Hassan, who is now studying Psychology with Clinical Psychology at Goldsmiths, University of London. Having joined Southwark College in 2020 after moving to the UK from Italy, Hassan began his journey on an ESOL programme before progressing to GCSE studies and ultimately higher education.

Reflecting on his experience, Hassan said: "When I joined Southwark College, I wasn't sure what direction I wanted to take. The support from my teachers and the careers team helped me build a clear pathway for my future. I started on an ESOL course to strengthen my English before progressing to GCSEs, and with their guidance and encouragement, I achieved excellent results. Today, I am studying Psychology with Clinical Psychology at Goldsmiths, University of London.

Returning to the College four years later, I was struck by the strong sense of community and the support available to students. It's clear that staff are dedicated to helping learners discover their ambitions, develop their confidence and achieve their goals. If you're willing to work hard, Southwark College provides the support and opportunities to help you succeed and achieve their goals."

The Higher Education Fair provided students with a valuable opportunity to compare universities, explore degree courses, learn more about apprenticeships and ask questions directly to higher education providers. By connecting students with universities and former learners who have successfully progressed to higher education, the event helped students feel informed and confident as they plan their next steps beyond college.
