Southwark College is delighted to announce that Mahmoud Altom, an Access to Higher Education in Business student has been highly commended for the Learning for Personal Progression Award at the Mayor of London’s fourth annual Adult Learning Awards, held at City Hall.

The awards showcase the transformative impact of adult education across the capital, celebrating learners who have made remarkable progress and the organisations that support them. This year, more than 250 nominations were submitted across ten categories, with 20 finalists recognised on the night.

Hosted by Jimmy McLoughlin OBE, former Downing Street special adviser and presenter of Jimmy’s Jobs of the Future, the event brought together over 150 guests from across the further education sector, community organisations and local businesses. Speakers included Howard Dawber OBE, Deputy Mayor for Business and Growth, and Bonnie Greer OBE, playwright and broadcaster. Guests also enjoyed a performance by the City Lit Percussion Orchestra.

Mahmoud’s recognition highlights his determination, resilience and commitment to personal development. His learning journey reflects the real impact that education can have in helping adults rebuild confidence, gain new skills and pursue new futures.

Reflecting on his achievement, Mahmoud Altom said: "While studying for my GCSEs, I faced eight months of homelessness after being granted refugee status and having to leave asylum seeker accommodation. Even without a permanent home, I never gave up on my education. What kept me going was the unwavering support from the staff at Southwark College. My teachers were kind and understanding, and the welfare team, especially Leroy, offered both emotional and practical support that made all the difference. Inspired by this experience, I am now a registered volunteer with Crisis, working to help end homelessness in our community."

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan praised this year’s winners and nominees. He said: “I’d like to congratulate all of the award winners and nominees of the fourth Adult Learning Awards. They have inspired others to learn, train and gain new skills. I’m committed to supporting Londoners to access good quality courses to help fulfil their potential and access well-paid jobs. I will continue to do all I can to ensure adult learning is accessible to all as we build a better, fairer and more prosperous London for everyone.”

Claire Reed, Assistant Principal for Employability and Skills at Southwark College, said: “Mahmoud’s journey is a reminder of why adult learning matters. He approached every challenge with resilience and a clear desire to grow, and his commendation is thoroughly deserved. At Southwark College, we are committed to creating opportunities that help adults gain confidence, new skills and a sense of direction. Mahmoud is an excellent example of what can be achieved through perseverance and the right environment.”

Southwark College is incredibly proud of Mahmoud’s accomplishment and the positive example he sets for adult learners across the community. To explore adult learning opportunities at Lewisham College, visit southwark.ac.uk/adults.
