Southwark College recently hosted its annual NCG Guarantee Community Conference, bringing together students, staff, and community partners for two days of reflection and celebration. The event was part of the colleges Black History Month celebrations and the wider NCG Guarantee initiative, which aims to empower learners through inclusive experiences, leadership opportunities, and community engagement.
The conference launched with a compelling performance of Working for Marcus by Loudmouth Theatre Company, addressing themes of child exploitation, knife crime, and substance misuse. The performance was followed by interactive workshops that encouraged students to explore these issues and share their thoughts in a safe and supportive environment.
The event’s programme was packed with activities designed to amplify student voice and celebrate Black History Month. Workshops focused on healthy relationships, conflict resolution, and LGBTQ+ inclusion, while assemblies welcomed new learners and encouraged networking across the college community.
The college atrium transformed into a vibrant hub of creativity and activism. Students showcased their work in an art and photography exhibition, contributed to foodbank and clothing donation drives, and took part in fundraising games and raffles organised by the Student Union. A student-led Black Heroes Wall and Wall of Pride paid tribute to Black heritage and identity, creating a powerful visual centrepiece for the event.
Student Union President, Keli Kelly, said: “I’ve enjoyed seeing all the students coming together to write on the Black Wall of Pride, because it shows that a lot of people really value and care about being inclusive in the college.”
On stage, keynote speakers inspired and challenged audiences. Future Champs delivered a passionate talk on learner voice and Black identity, while former professional footballer and motivational speaker, Jess Clarke closed the day with reflections on social impact, challenging adversity and her own advice for personal growth.
The music and dance students also performed for a large audience, showcasing their talent and professionalism.
Molly Whiston, Assistant Principal of Student Experience at Southwark College said: “The Community Conference is all about celebrating culture, and connection. It was inspiring to see learners lead conversations, showcase their creativity, and engage with important social issues. This event truly captured the strength of our community and how we come together to support, celebrate, and uplift one another.”
The NCG Guarantee Community Conference was a celebration of culture and inclusion, it provided a platform for dialogue and collaboration. Southwark College remains committed to fostering these experiences and supporting every learner on their journey to success.
