Southwark College welcomed entrepreneur and sustainability advocate Hugo Knox from ORNA (Optimised Reused Natural Assets) marking the launch of the college’s Business Level 1 Enterprise Project. Around 40 enthusiastic students explored innovative business ideas addressing global environmental challenges in an interactive workshop.
The session began with Hugo sharing his personal journey in sustainable enterprise, offering insights into the world of green business and its growing impact on the modern economy. Students then engaged in an interactive brainstorming session, forming teams to develop initial concepts for eco-friendly businesses, from renewable energy solutions to sustainable packaging innovations.
Students demonstrated strong teamwork and critical thinking, working in groups of four to identify potential solutions and pitch their early ideas. The session concluded with lively discussion and clear excitement about the journey ahead.
Over the term, students will continue to develop their projects with guidance from Business tutors. Themes include sustainable fashion, food waste reduction, circular economy initiatives, and green transport solutions.
In the new year, teams will pitch their ideas to a panel featuring The ORNA team, carbon specialist Dave Culley, and another special guest. The winning team will receive mentorship from the ORNA team and support to strengthen their applications for programs such as The King’s Trust Enterprise Programme and Trampoline NH C.I.C, both based in Southwark.
The ORNA project is designed to ensure every participating student gains a better understanding of what it takes to be an entrepreneur, discovers the vast opportunities in the green sector, and learns why climate action is so important — especially for their generation.
This initiative highlights Southwark College’s commitment to enrichment, enterprise, and environmental responsibility, empowering learners to think creatively and make a positive impact on the planet.
