Southwark College recently hosted Thrive Together: ESOL for Community Life, a full-day event celebrating adult learning, community connection and the voice of ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) students.

Bringing together around 100 adult students throughout the day, the event took place across in the College’s Employability Hub and teaching spaces, offering a varied programme of guest speakers and practical workshops. The event was designed to support students in developing confidence, strengthening communication skills and building a greater sense of belonging within their local community.

The day featured a range of interactive sessions focused on real-world learning. Activities delivered by Kineara CIC in the Employability Hub encouraged students to share experiences, explore housing-related issues and consider ways of contributing to their local communities through volunteering.

Students also took part in digital-focused activities within the Digital Hub, where they explored virtual reality technology as a tool for communication and learning. Classroom-based workshops provided opportunities for smaller group discussion and reflection, helping students to develop emotional awareness and confidence alongside their language skills.

Throughout the afternoon, students participated in further sessions delivered by the Family Emotional Wellbeing Project CIC and London South Bank University. These activities reinforced the value of collaboration, wellbeing and peer support within the learning journey. The programme demonstrated how ESOL provision extends beyond language development, supporting students to navigate daily life, access opportunities and engage more confidently within their communities.

A key theme throughout the event was the importance of learner voice, ensuring that adult ESOL students are not only supported but also heard. By creating an inclusive environment where experiences and perspectives could be shared, the event highlighted the value of community-led learning and mutual support.

Thrive Together: ESOL for Community Life reflects Southwark College’s ongoing commitment to inclusive education and lifelong learning. By providing opportunities for connection, development and empowerment, the College continues to support students in building skills, confidence and community connections that have a meaningful impact both inside and outside the classroom. Through activities that promote wellbeing, communication and belonging, students are better equipped to progress in their studies, participate in community life and pursue future opportunities.
