Southwark College Level 3 Business students organised a lively and engaging event called 'Small Business Market Day' in the campus atrium. The student-led event is part of their final assessment and aims to promote entrepreneurial skills and bring awareness to social causes. It featured multiple stalls, each representing a student-made small business or a charitable organisation.
Most student teams supported charities of their choice by encouraging staff and students to make small donations. In return, they offered sweet or savoury treats. Charities such as Save the Children were featured, advocating for education access for young women who otherwise lack opportunities to attend school. Social Media Awareness was another cause, educating the public on the dangers and responsible use of online platforms. Thirst Relief was also represented, supporting communities worldwide deprived of clean water, while Brixton Soup Kitchen highlighted the vital work of helping homeless individuals and aiding their integration into society.
Alongside charitable initiatives, some students showed their innovative business ideas. One notable project was Craft for Nature, a sustainable initiative committed to fighting pollution, climate change, deforestation, and plastic waste. This project aimed to raise awareness about environmental issues and promote eco-friendly practices among attendees. Students also promoted travelling in England this summer, featuring artwork and photographs of talented local artists. To make the display look professional and appealing, the college's Digital Support Team assisted the students with selecting the artwork.
Overall, the Small Business Market Day' was an inspiring event that brought together students and staff to discuss social and environmental causes. It highlighted the importance of entrepreneurship, social consciousness, and ecological sustainability.
