Students at Southwark College recently took part in a series of engaging LoudSpeaker Cheese + Pickle workshops designed to help them build healthy relationships, understand personal boundaries and create a culture of respect both on campus and beyond.
Delivered as part of the College's commitment to student wellbeing and personal development, the workshops gave students a safe and supportive space to explore important topics including healthy relationships, consent, respect, misogyny and the role everyone plays in creating positive communities.
Using LoudSpeaker's distinctive interactive approach, students were encouraged to reflect on how attitudes, behaviour and language can influence the experiences of others. Through open discussions and practical activities, they explored what healthy relationships look like in practice and why mutual respect is essential in education, the workplace and wider society.
The sessions also challenged students to think critically about misogyny and harmful behaviours, highlighting how everyday actions and casual language can contribute to wider cultural issues. Students were encouraged to consider their own influence within friendship groups and college life, while developing a greater understanding of personal responsibility and accountability.
A key feature of the workshops was empowering students to become active bystanders. Participants gained confidence in recognising inappropriate behaviour, understanding how to respond safely and knowing where to access support for themselves or others experiencing harassment or discrimination.
Molly Whiston, Assistant Principal Student Experience, said:
"These engaging and vital sessions demonstrate Southwark College's focus on student wellbeing, equality and personal development alongside academic study. By working with organisations such as LoudSpeaker, the College continues to equip students with the knowledge, confidence and values needed to thrive in education, the workplace and wider society. We look forward to welcoming LoudSpeaker back in the next academic year."
The workshops generated thoughtful discussion and high levels of engagement, with students sharing perspectives, asking questions and developing a deeper understanding of the importance of empathy, accountability and mutual respect.
As part of the NCG Guarantee, initiatives such as the LoudSpeaker Cheese + Pickle programme help ensure Southwark College remains a safe, inclusive and supportive environment where students feel respected, valued and empowered to succeed. By encouraging open conversations and positive behaviours, the College continues to help students develop not only academically, but also as confident and responsible members of society.
