Students at Southwark College recently had the unique opportunity to take part in an inspiring Reducing Violence workshop led by Street Doctors, a national charity dedicated to equipping young people with lifesaving first-aid skills.
The sessions focused on practical, hands-on training for real-life emergencies. Students learned how to respond if someone is bleeding heavily from a wound or has become unconscious. Through interactive demonstrations and scenario-based activities, learners practiced how to call an ambulance, stem blood loss, place someone in the recovery position, and deliver chest compressions if needed.
The training didn’t just cover the mechanics of first aid. Street Doctors also addressed mental health and decision-making under pressure, helping young people understand how stress and fear can affect the way we act in emergency situations. The combination of science-based explanations, myth-busting, and practical exercises ensured students left feeling informed, confident, and ready to act if the situation ever arose.
By hosting Street Doctors, Southwark College continues to provide young people with life skills that extend far beyond the classroom. The programme builds resilience, awareness, and confidence, empowering students to protect themselves and support others in their communities.
