Southwark College was delighted to host the latest Southwark ESOL Network meeting, chaired by English for Action. The event brought together a diverse group of stakeholders from across the borough, with strong attendance reflecting the shared commitment to supporting ESOL learners within our community.
The meeting served as a valuable platform for collaboration, with attendees exchanging ideas and discussing current challenges and opportunities in ESOL provision. Key topics included eligibility criteria, housing concerns, mental health support, and recent changes to Right to Study regulations—all critical issues impacting learners’ educational journeys.
Attendees also welcomed Southwark Council’s plans to develop a live adult learning map—an initiative designed to improve access to local ESOL services and helping learners navigate available support more easily.
As the largest ESOL provider in the borough, Southwark College continues to lead the way with a comprehensive curriculum spanning from Pre-Entry to Level 2. Our signposting leaflets, designed to guide learners toward further education and community services, drew particular interest and were recognised as a valuable tool in learner support.
It was a pleasure to reconnect with colleagues from neighbouring colleges and partner organisations. The energy and engagement in the room highlighted the power of collaboration in driving forward inclusive, learner-centred provision across Southwark.
Our Vice Principal, Scott Peasey said: “Bringing together such a diverse group of providers shows the strength of our local ESOL community. These conversations are essential to improving access, equity, and outcomes for learners across Southwark.”
Representatives in attendance included:
English for Action, Southwark College, Southwark ADULT Learning Service, Southwark Council, South Bank Colleges Lambeth, Newham College, Oasis Language Cafe, Southwark Works, Southwark Day Centre for Asylum Seekers, Citizens UK, Tea Connect, Surrey Square Primary School, IRMO, and United Saint Saviours.
Looking ahead, the meeting set the direction for future collaboration – including the upcoming Southwark English Language Fair. This event will be another brilliant opportunity to celebrate and showcase ESOL across the borough as well as adult skills beyond language learning.
