Equivalent to 1.5 A Levels, the qualification provides a strong foundation for further study or employment within science-related industries. The course focuses on key scientific disciplines including biology, chemistry and physics, alongside the practical application of science within areas such as healthcare, environmental science and laboratory work. Learners develop scientific knowledge, practical laboratory skills and analytical thinking through a combination of classroom learning, experiments and project-based work. The Foundation Diploma is designed as a progression route onto the second year of study, allowing students to complete the full BTEC Extended Diploma in Applied Science.

  • Entry Requirements, Units, Assessment and more...

    Entry Requirements

Applicants will need five GCSEs at grades 9 to 4, including Science, Mathematics and English. This course is suitable for students who are interested in developing both practical and theoretical scientific knowledge and who may wish to progress into higher education or science-related careers.

    Assessment Method

Assessment on this course is a combination of coursework, externally assessed examinations and practical scientific work. Students complete four internally assessed coursework units and two externally assessed written examinations. Assessment also places strong emphasis on practical investigation, data analysis, scientific communication and the application of scientific knowledge to real-world situations.

    Aims of the course

One of the main aims of this course is to develop core scientific knowledge across biology, chemistry and physics, alongside applied areas such as environmental science and medical science. The programme also focuses on building practical and analytical skills through hands-on laboratory work, helping students develop techniques in experimentation, data analysis and problem-solving. Students are encouraged to apply scientific theories to real-world scenarios, helping them become workplace-ready and develop an understanding of how science is used within industry. The course also prepares students for progression into higher education or employment, providing a strong foundation for university-level study in subjects such as biomedical science, environmental science or healthcare. Through assignments and investigative projects, students develop research skills, critical thinking and the ability to work independently. This qualification provides a vocational alternative to traditional academic pathways by combining theoretical knowledge with practical application in a supportive learning environment.

    Progression Opportunities

The Foundation Diploma is designed to lead into a second year of study, allowing students to progress onto the full BTEC Extended Diploma in Applied Science. Successful completion of the qualification can also support progression into higher education courses in areas such as biomedical science, environmental science, healthcare or laboratory sciences. Students may also explore entry-level career opportunities within laboratory work, healthcare, pharmaceuticals or environmental science.

    Facilities

Students have access to a range of specialist facilities that support the practical and applied nature of the course. This includes laboratories equipped for biology, chemistry and physics practical work, allowing students to complete experiments involving chemical analysis, material testing and scientific investigation. Specialist equipment includes microscopes, pH meters, calorimeters, colorimeters, laboratory glassware and other scientific apparatus used within professional laboratory settings. Students also have access to ICT suites and scientific software for data modelling, analysis and report generation, including programmes such as Excel and online simulation tools that support theoretical learning. Additional learning resources are available through the library and Learning Resource Centre, where students can access books, journals and online databases for research and assignments.

    Career Options

Students are encouraged to complete a second year of study to achieve the full BTEC Extended Diploma in Applied Science. The qualification can support future progression into careers within laboratory work, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, environmental science and other science-related industries. It also provides valuable preparation for higher education and future professional training within scientific fields.
