"I’ve become more confident and more accepting of things that I may not be able to control, I’ve learnt to use my time well, valuing my time here and enjoying every minute that happens."
Apprenticeships can take you almost anywhere, as Jadzia Francis, a Level 2 Cultural Venue Operations apprentice proves. The 19-year-old, who previously studied for BTECs in Business, Photography and Science, is now working as an apprentice at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre – a place which is very special to her.
She says: “To be honest, the Globe has always had a place in my heart because I used to come here when I was young. The best part of my apprenticeship is simply the chance to work here.”
A reconstruction of the original Globe Theatre built in 1599, Shakespeare’s Globe on the South Bank stages plays as they would have been during the playwright’s time, and has become a very popular landmark and tourist attraction.
As an apprentice, Jadzia helps to create this authentic experience for visitors. “The fact that I’ve been able to get to know what happens behind the scenes has made me adore Shakespeare’s work even more,” she explains.
Jadzia’s skills and confidence have soared since starting her apprenticeship. Alongside her work at the Globe she has thrown herself into life at College, finding time to join both the student parliament and Students’ Union in her busy schedule.
Jadzia’s sights are now firmly set on working in a creative job. She says: “I don’t think I could do a ‘normal’ job having worked here. I like the idea of doing something a little different, but for now I’m just taking it one day at a time.”
