Southwark College is celebrating record results this year with more students achieving top grades at the central London college and an increase in overall pass grades for both A-Levels and vocational qualifications.

In addition to the A-Level success, a record number of students collected their BTEC results, with many achieving three distinction stars – the highest results possible.

Annette Cast, Principal at Southwark College, said: “Congratulations to all our students receiving their results today, I'm delighted that their hard work and dedication has paid off. Many of our students come from some of the most challenging backgrounds but they have worked extremely hard in a very difficult year to achieve these excellent results with many now going on to their first choice of university or an apprenticeship. They have demonstrated their vast array of strengths and have grown into a fantastic cohort of inspiring students.”

Based in the heart of central London and the Southbank, some of Southwark College’s most popular courses are in the Creative Arts and this year they also had some of the best results, increasing their overall pass rate by +48% and achieving a 98% pass rate across all Creative Arts disciplines, including Performing Arts, Creative Digital Media, Art and Design, Games Design, Music Performance and Production and Fashion.

Annette said: “COVID-19 meant many of our students and staff had to find new ways of learning in more practical subjects, such as Creative Arts but this didn’t stop our students and their results are a testament to their dedication to their studies during this time and the commitment they have for succeeding in their chosen profession. I am delighted that they have achieved such outstanding grades and that they are ready to take their next steps into employment, apprenticeships or higher education.”

Louisa Konadu Amoako achieved A*AA for her A-Levels in Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics, she said: “When I first found out about Southwark College, I had no idea that my life was about to change. It was during my time here that I discovered my passion for scientific research and helping people, and I was given the encouragement and support I needed to pursue this ambition. This has played a huge role in getting me where I am today and I’m excited to start studying Pharmacy at the University College London and chasing my dreams of working in cancer research.”

Idris Abdella achieved AAA* for his A-Levels in Biology, Mathematics and Chemistry, he said: “I’m thrilled with my results and excited to start applying for Medicine courses at Russel Group Universities. My time at Southwark College has expanded my knowledge and helped me build confidence in myself to achieve my goals. My teachers have fully supported me throughout my journey and I look forward to taking the lessons I learnt here into higher education.”

Throughout this year my teachers have gone above and beyond to help me, and I couldn’t have achieved this result without their support.”

Maimuna De Freitas, has also secured a place at university today, having collected a Triple Distinction* (D*D*D*) in Applied Science.  Maimuna said: “I’m very happy with my grades and was so excited when I saw that I had been accepted at the University of Bristol to study Physiology.
