Southwark College

Southwark College, in partnership with Mace, held a construction day at Southwark College

The public event consisted of speeches and demonstrations from MPs and industry professionals, respectively, competitions based on the different areas of construction and a prize giving ceremony featuring rugby legend Zinzan Brooke and TV DIY expert Tommy Walsh. Learners from Southwark College and Lewisham College competed in competitions in brickwork, painting and decorating, plumbing, electrics and joinery. Southwark College provides you with the opportunity to re-skill or up-skill in all of these areas, improving your employment prospects and the possibility to advance in your career in the construction trade

Healthy Careers Ahead for Health & Social Care and Childcare Learners

BTEC Health & Social Care and Childcare Students mingled with top industry specialists at the departmental careers day event this month. Representatives from the NHS, Southwark Primary Education and other health and care based organisations were present; conducting workshops and discussing the career prospects our learners.

Programme leader, Lorraine Bullard, kick started the day with a welcoming address, reminding all to make the most of the day's opportunities and to focus on planning for the future in Health and Care beyond college. Students then split up into industries, with  Health & Social Care and Childcare

learners going to discover some of their options in separate workshops.

The future childcare workers got to experience a day in the life of a teaching assistant and partook in simulation based activities, which included supporting a child in a primary school environment. The group also met with a nursery nurse who told of her experiences in the profession and shared advice. Meanwhile, our promising Health & Social Care students engaged in workshops with London Probation and Family Mosaic - who specialise in child counselling and resettlement. Several learners mentioned that they were particularly pleased to have had the opportunity to make links with professionals, whom they rarely had had a chance to liaise within the past.

An awards ceremony followed, in recognition of those who made outstanding achievements in the academic year. Categories included: most improved since the start of the course, positive attitude to learning and positive contributions to the department, with more than thirty certificates being given in total. The hard working award winners said they felt valued because their

achievements had been noted, with many quite surprised and overwhelmed at being honoured.

The day was a great success overall as students believe the experience will help them to make more informed choices about their academic and employment choices later on... Health and Care look forward to the next time!

Award winners! (From left to right) Mercy Addy, Adiam Yohannes, Khadijat Abdusalam and Rachel McAvoy.
