On 6 December, Southwark college held a ‘Celebration of success’ event to highlight the achievements of learners who have boosted their employability – with three quarters gaining a job – as a result of a course run with ISS. A specialist quality cleaning services company, ISS forms a Sector Based Work Academy with the College.

The course, which was aimed at helping unemployed people to get back into work, included a week of study and site visits with recognised organisations such as the South London and Maudsley trust, followed by a guaranteed interview. Attendees had to be referred by their JCP advisor or by a company that supports unemployed people.

From the course, 75 per cent of learners were offered a job on completion, many of whom spoke about their experience at the celebration event. Learners told the audience how the course had developed their confidence and restored their trust in employability programmes, as well as talking about their journey since completing the course.

As a result of this highly successful learning programme, the College is working with ISS again this year in the hope of getting more referrals and enabling more people to get back into employment.
