Teaching

This course is designed to develop you as a professional teacher/trainer by broadening and enhancing your professional knowledge and understanding, skills-base and practice. It is a part-time, two-year, in-service course, delivered one evening per week. There is a PGCE pathway available in year 2 for graduates and an opportunity for English and maths teachers to complete two modules in their specialist areas.

If successful you will be awarded either the:

  • Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training or the Level 6 Professional Graduate Certificate in Education.
  • If you have taken the English or Maths pathway you will receive accreditation for two units in your specialism.

Entry Requirements

  • Subject &/or vocational qualification at Level 3 or above (or evidence of extensive industrial experience)
  • Evidence of degree - to complete PGCE pathway
  • Minimum 100 hours teaching practice (40hrs Yr1 and 60hrs Yr2)
  • A subject mentor secured prior to starting the course
  • Effective communication and a good command of written English
  • Successful completion of written initial assessment and online literacy and numeracy diagnostics
  • Additional assessment for maths and English specialists

To apply for this course you must be aged 18 or over on or before the 31st August 2018

    Assessment Method

    Candidates build an online portfolio of evidence which will include: written assignments, presentations, peer observations, teaching observations and reflective logs etc. There is no final examination.

    Aims of the course

    To develop the knowledge, skills and understanding of teachers and trainers working in Further Education colleges, adult and community learning, 14-19 units in schools and academies, private training organisations, prison education and the public services (police, paramedics, fire service).

    Progression Opportunities

    Successful completion of this course may lead to: to increased responsibilities, further teaching opportunities, paid/permanent employment/promotion in this sector; progression to the Diploma in Teaching in either English or Mathematics or the top-up BA (Hons) Education and Professional Training (2-yrs).

    Professional accreditation: Post qualification you may apply for and register for Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS).

    Facilities

    There will be a mix of delivery models used: classroom-based teaching, seminars, tutorials and workshops, independent research study and online learning. You will also have access to our VLE sites (eME and Blackboard) that will provide you with a range of materials and resources to support your learning whilst on this course. Both individual tutorial support and additional learning support are also available, if required.
