Teaching the foundation skills of art and design, this course is a stepping stone to an exciting creative career. On the programme you'll develop a broad range of technical skills and learn about the entire visual arts process, from initial brief or idea to final outcome. The course also explores creative development skills and problem solving through experimenting with materials, research and drawing. As well as taking units of study in art and design, you'll complete project based art and design work, attend practical workshops, undertake independent study and attend course related external visits to art galleries and other places of interest. The course includes the compulsory functional skills subjects mathematics and English, alongside your art.

Assessment throughout the course will be formative to support and encourage learning and provide an opportunity for feedback. Only the final unit will be graded to allow students the best opportunity to achieve. The final unit requires you to research, organise, plan, produce and present a personal project, and your achievement in this final unit determines the overall grade for the qualification.
Aims of the course
To introduce you to the skills and techniques used in art and design, allowing you to explore, develop and test your creativity within a structure that will provide a sound base of skills and knowledge.
Successful completion of this course can lead to a level 2 programme of study in art, design, fashion or other creative courses. Progress to a Level 2 programme to develop your skills and work towards a career as a fine artist, illustrator, sculptor, product designer, print maker, architect.
You will have access to a dedicated base studio, facilities for screen-printing, darkroom and Art shop.
