" I’ve really grown up during my time at Southwark College. It’s a different mentality coming to college rather than a school and I like it. Southwark College also encourages students to become more involved in everyday college life and this includes Student Union, Course Representative and Student Ambassador.”

College News - Winning a Regional Award
A SOUTHWARK College learner who left school with few qualifications and struggled to get into his chosen field of construction has been rewarded for his hard work by winning a regional award.

Michael Cahill won the Learning through Engineering, Construction and Technology Award as part of a celebration of Adult Learners' Week in London last month. Michael struggled with work and apprenticeships, but nothing seemed right.

When he enrolled on the Diploma programme at Southwark College, he attended counselling alongside his course to help control his temper. This proved helpful and the standard of his work rose. He continues to work towards overcoming the obstacles he has faced, and his teachers are confident that his future looks promising.

Michael, who now hopes to start a BTEC Forensics course in September, said: "While at college I have also learned how to interact with learners from different backgrounds. I have learned how to keep calm and channel my energies."

Adult Learners' Week is the UK's largest festival and celebration of adult learning. Since 1992 the National Institute of Adult Continuing Education (NIACE) has co-ordinated the Adult Learners' Week Awards, which mark adults' achievements and showcase the creativity, imagination and energy adults bring to their learning.

Mayor of London Boris Johnson said: "In these challenging times, the importance of taking on a new challenge later in life is greater than ever. Whatever their motivation - be it enhancing career prospects, helping the kids, a change of direction or simply indulging a passion, I applaud those who embark on further education in their adult life."
