College News - Floristry

SOUTHWARK College proved to be a ‘blooming’ good choice for the regional heats of a prestigious worldwide competition.

Competitors headed to the Floristry studio at the College’s Waterloo Centre and undertook various tasks to demonstrate their creative and technical skills around a garden wedding theme as part of the WorldSkills Floristry competition. Each contestant was asked to make a bridesmaid bouquet, wrist corsage and table arrangements and a mystery item, using only a brief and a bucket of flowers.

Southwark College learners Rosie Welch and Katrina Moran finished second and third respectively. Rosie said: “I was nervous at the beginning but the competition was so well organised it settled my nerves very quickly.” Katrina added: “The College encouraged me to take part and prepare well for the competition. I’m glad I did it.”

The highest scoring competitors who meet the required standard across all the heats will be invited to compete at the UK final at the Malvern Autumn Show 2010.

The competition promotes excellence in vocational training. Every two years thousands of young skilled people accompanied by their teachers and trainers gather around the world to compete before the public in skills of various trades. Regional and national skills competitions are held in 52 countries and regions – with Southwark College the only Further Education establishment invited by WorldSkills UK to hold this event.

The experience and results of the competition recognises the success and achievements of competitors. It also motivates them to aspire to higher standards.
