Testimonial

" I’ve really grown up during my time at Southwark College. It’s a different mentality coming to college rather than a school and I like it. Southwark College also encourages students to become more involved in everyday college life and this includes Student Union, Course Representative and Student Ambassador.”

"Southwark College put me on the straight and narrow path as soon as I joined to study. They made me realise that the college is not like school. I have learned a lot at Southwark College and I’m extremely thankful for everything they have done for me"

ICT at Southwark College | Print |  E-mail
Southwark College has over 600 computers for learners to use. They are situated in the Learning Resource Centres, IT classrooms, standard classrooms and the Training Shop at the Waterloo Centre. All learner computers have Pentium processors and industry standard software installed. Most of them have Internet access. Many standard classrooms are also equipped with a PC for lecturers to use for presentations and for learners to use as part of their classroom activities. There are also over 80 Interactive Whiteboards across the College - with another 25 to come this year which can be used as large projection screens. Their large viewing area makes them ideal for group presentations, teaching and training environments.

IT for Communication

Southwark College also provides web-based information and communication resources for learners:

1. Moodle - is the College Virtual Learning Environment [VLE]. It is an online learning tool that contains information about courses and provides communication channels to help learners communicate with each other and with their teachers. Teachers upload course information to Moodle for learners to access whenever they like.

Although the information on Moodle will vary from course to course it will typically include:

·         Announcements

·         Scheme of work

·         Syllabus

·         Course handbook

·         Teacher contact details

·         Course notes and handouts

·         Course assessments

·         Email

·         Discussion boards and chat rooms

Learners with a Moodle account can access the online bulletin board, discussion boards and chat rooms as well as important information about their courses and course materials and exercises. Moodle can be accessed from any online machine inside the College and from any online machine outside the College. Learners with a Moodle account can also access Moodle from outside the College.

2. Nimms  - is the learner email. All learners at the College have an email account which they can use to contact teachers, other learners as well as contacts outside the College.
