Last season saw Southwark College men’s basketball team achieve a 100
per cent success rate by winning ten out of ten games against their rivals Lambeth
College.
The final game started at 4pm 28/6/2011 at Southwark College, with the teams warming-up on court from 3.30pm, as Southwark College students started to arrive for the game. Tip-off was at 4pm, with an intense first quarter rounded off by a performance from Ibrahim Kana from Southwark college and Moni from Lambeth college.
Another 20 minutes of play for the second quarter brought a welcome half-time break for both teams. The spectators were treated to an exhibition ‘ALLSTAR’ game where coaches from both teams played, some of the London Southbank university basketball team and the all-star players from both teams.
The second half of the game was high-energy and brought out the great talent in all the players who took part.
‘The whole team played really well,’ said Coach Isaac Omirin, ‘with outstanding performances from point guard Ibrahim Kana, small forward/ centre Peter Grumble and Arturs Vitins, who lead the team as top scorers.. The Southwark College team only had seven players compared to Lambeth College, who had 12. It shows how strong we are to pull off a comfortable win with less players.’
Coach Isaac – new Sports Lecturer who also plays basketball for a national team – has hopes to carry the league on next year.
Southwark College men’s basketball team would like to thank Sandra Adja-Codjoe, Melona Headly, Irene Hurley and the Executives for their support; Jonathan Cox for promoting the event and all the students that helped out with the tabling, recording of the game and crowd control.
The team would also like to thank Lambeth College coach Aaron Moseley for providing the music on the night and bringing his team over because without them, the event would not have happened.
