Tackling discrimination and promoting equality and diversity are at the heart of our College’s mission. We welcome and recognise the fact that the College is subject to public sector equality duties and must comply with relevant statutory provisions designed to prevent unlawful discrimination. We are equally committed to complying with our duties under human rights legislation and promoting a culture in which these rights are understood and respected. We believe that a proactive approach to equality, human rights and diversity supports our mission, contributes to community cohesion and increases opportunities to widen participation in education. All my individual needs are taken into consideration. I get very good support from the College." “I have been a student at Southwark College since 2005 and I have never felt discriminated on the ground of my culture, race or religion. Southwark College has dedicated a prayer room at all three campuses for us Muslim students to use for our prayer sessions. In addition, the meat that is sold in our Canteen is Halal, therefore, we can eat the food they provide.” "As an Asian in Southwark College, I feel safe and respected here. This is my second year and up till now I’ve never felt lonely, isolated or experienced any kind of bullying or harassment because of the colour of my skin." "Southwark College is extremely open when it comes to different backgrounds and cultures. We've had loads of diversity weeks to celebrate different cultures such as black history week, inter-faith week, plus a LGBT week (Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender). Southwark College is the only educational establishment where I have been that actively promotes equality and diversity within cultures. That is why I am proud to be a student here." "As a mature student, my tutor gives me advice on how to balance my part-time job and college work in order to succeed in the course. Lecturers have been helpfully by giving me some extra time outside of their normal teaching hours.”

" I’ve really grown up during my time at Southwark College. It’s a different mentality coming to college rather than a school and I like it. Southwark College also encourages students to become more involved in everyday college life and this includes Student Union, Course Representative and Student Ambassador.”
