Southwark College has taken a pro-active approach to working with local employers. We have used the employers' expertise to help us develop relevant courses of study and vocational training opportunities, leading to local employment for local people in the Borough of Southwark.
The College has introduced 8 new curriculum areas in the last 6 months: a range of construction trades, beauty therapy, hairdressing, sports therapy, specialist sports academies (football, basketball, boxing), personal training, catering and hospitality. All of this provision has been developed with local employers to provide opportunities for local employment and has the added distinct advantage of being delivered in real work environments to enhance the employment prospects. Employers working with the College on these exciting new ventures this year include Sellar (building the Shard of Glass), Mace, Balfour Beatty, Travis Perkins and Southwark Borough Council.
The College has taken a flexible, responsive and innovative approach to curriculum design and delivery driven by the needs of both employers and employees. For example, the need for Cleaning Services Operatives was identified by OFM Support Services Ltd, a leading London facilities management contractor. Southwark College has been pleased and proud to work with OFM Support Services Ltd to develop the bespoke training needed, resulting in learners being interviewed for vacancies within the company having successfully completed the course.
